How to Choose an RCFE

Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make. A Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) offers a middle ground between staying at home and a large assisted living community: personal care in a smaller, more home-like setting.

Begin by understanding what your loved one needs day to day. Do they need help with bathing, dressing, medications, or mobility? Do they have memory concerns? A good RCFE will offer a care assessment to match their needs to the right level of support.

Photos tell part of the story, but a visit tells the rest. Notice whether the home is clean and calm, whether residents look comfortable and engaged, and how caregivers speak with the people in their care. Ask to visit around a mealtime to see the food and the atmosphere.

In a smaller home, the caregiver-to-resident ratio matters enormously. More caregivers per resident usually means faster help, more attention, and stronger relationships. Ask how many residents live in the home and how many caregivers are on duty.

In California, RCFEs are licensed by the Department of Social Services. Ask about licensing, staff training, background checks, and safety features throughout the home. A trustworthy home will answer these questions openly.
